Spinal Surgeries

To accurately determine the cause of your back pain, your orthopaedic surgeon may order certain diagnostic tests such as Xrays, MRI, CTScan, EMG, just to name a few. There are three basic types of surgery (these may also be done as a combination).

  • Laminectomy/Laminotomy: Bone is removed in order to alleviate pressure on the nerve. This also allows access to areas where other surgery may be required.
  • Diskectomy: Removal of a damaged disk. This also releases pressure on the nerves.
  • Fusion: Joining of adjacent vertebrae. This adds stability at the point of the spine.
Surgery may take from one to five hours and average expected hospital stay is 5 - 7 days. On average the patient will not expect to return to work for 3 - 6 months after the surgery.

To help us with your medical information or billing information, you can download a copy of our medical and patient information sheets to print and fill out prior to your office visit. These can then be faxed to us, or you may bring the filled-out forms with you on your next visit. The information in these forms will need to be updated whenever you change insurance companies or have new medical information that needs to be entered into your medical record. These files are in "PDF" format and that means you need a form reader like Adobe Acrobat Reader to be able to look at and print the forms. If you cannot read these forms you can get the Adobe Reader by clicking on the "Get Adobe Reader" icon on the right.
