Total Joint Replacements
The procedure involves removing a damaged joint such as the hip or
knee and replacing it with a prosthetic or artificial joint. Surgery
usually takes 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 hours and average expected hospital stay is
5 - 7 days. The patient will not expect to return to work for 4 - 6
months after the surgery.
Spinal Surgeries
To accurately determine the cause of your back pain, your orthopaedic
surgeon may order certain diagnostic tests such as Xrays, MRI, CTScan,
EMG, just to name a few. There are three basic types of surgery (these
may also be done as a combination).
- Laminectomy/Laminotomy: Bone is removed in order to
alleviate pressure on the nerve. This also allows access to areas
where other surgery may be required.
- Diskectomy: Removal of a damaged disk. This also releases
pressure on the nerves.
- Fusion: Joining of adjacent vertebrae. This adds
stability at the point of the spine.
Surgery may take from one to five hours and average expected hospital
stay is 5 - 7 days. On average the patient will not expect to return to
work for 3 - 6 months after the surgery.
